Asus EEE PC love

Rumor has it that Asus is going to release the EEE PC Desktop.  Some may think, WHY.. the EEE PC is an ultra portable laptop, why would we need something similar in the desktop space?

EEE PC DesktopI’d say for those not wanting a giant box sitting under/on their desk whirring away, this makes for a perfect computing device suitable for most things home users need out of a computer.  Email, internet, facebook, whatever the next cool Web 2.0 site is… you get the point.  Why would my parents need quad-core, 4G ram etc?  They don’t.

Minimalists will love it.  Those living in small apartments want to make good use of space, and this little thing can sit in a living room or studio apartment without being completely obvious.  Apple has similar functional (and stylistic) achievements with their Mac Mini and iMac products.

There’s a EEE PC in my house and I will most certainly pickup an EEE PC Desktop if/when it arrives.  I’m guessing the price point will only be a few $100 more than the laptop version.  Go Asus!

  • I would hope the desktop model would be around the same or actually less than the laptop model since you don’t get an LCD screen. I guess it will depend on the specs.

  • Thats a good point – hopefully they stay with solid-state memory and just rip the screen portion off. Looking at the picture I’m not totally sold on the fancy stand, I much prefer the look of the mac mini as a tiny box with no frills.

  • Is this the same thing that you’re writing about? Or another device altogether?

In its continual quest to become a household name, computer components maker Asus (TPE: 2357) has announced a gadget they’re calling the ROG XG – a “VGA and multimedia docking station” for notebooks. In what Asus describes as a “world’s first” for a docking station, the ROG (which, somewhat akwardly, the company claims is an acronym for “Republic of Gamer”) comes bundled with a 256MB graphics card to supplement your notebook’s underpowered chipset, as well as a built-in express card interface, two speakers with simulated Dolby 5.1, 6.1 or even 7.1 sound, and a 4-port USB 2.0 hub. The thing looks cool, in a gamer kind of way; cool enough to grab honorable mention at the Red Dot design awards this year. (More…)

(Hmm, no preview, so I hope the html works! If not, maybe you can reformat?)

  • No, not the same.. That’s an interesting product tho.

  • Looks like the specs/price have dropped:

I guess it depends on what you’re using it for when Dell has bigger boxes for about the same price + free shipping.

    Hey Mark,

It would be great to see the comparison between the Mac Mini and this Asus product. This EEE looks slick.

    Great blog! I love it!
