Marc Canter presents a journey into the state of social media evolution. Marc’s blog is at marc.blogs.it. Online communities: Evolved technically from usenet. Social Networks: Metcalf’s law says the more the merrier! However he doesn’t really agree with it. He’s been a part of it, and doesn’t feel that he’s a better person because of having 1000 more friends.. He’d rather be a part of a network of 50 people, of the RIGHT people. This is how businesses work, this is how humans interact. It’s too much noise and weighs you down otherwise. Credit to Bryght! They had the first metanetwork – a la Drupal. 10 points – whats the most predominant network right now? NING. Flux/kickass are copies of such. Things seem to be going vertical these days. In the future there will be 100k’s of these distributed, specialized networks. There is no ROI if you put too much $ into the network.. whats the driving force to drop the price? Pre-built networks to make it easy. Social features need to be brought to all software. Where do we see it going? Blogs, productivity software, PIM, intranets etc. Widgets: adsense, ilike, rocku, all share the same thing – they don’t have anything to do with it’s destination. If widgets knew what they were inside the destination? MyBlogLog is on the beginning stages of this – we are members of the same group; (call out to matt to bake something into wordpress like MyBlogLog). What happens when things like google maps knows where your friends are? What about search knowing what your friends are searching for? This would directly translate to the type of results you’ll be getting! Get more specific – reviews, comments, ratings, fans of. Using the example of the bell.ca video store/music store. The code has been componentized – this is called widgetization. The one guy on the 6th floor of the Bell building is trying to get the community to interact with the project. HiveLive is another example of such a project. Why is this important? This is a key part of the evolution of the distributed web. Myspace/Facebook have been the educators to the masses. The scam has been exposed – the hype of valuation is out of hand. What’s this based upon is monetizing people. We need to make sure that the socialness becomes a commodity that we can use anywhere. Opensocial graph API is the start of this. Two way apis – Right now it’s all about consuming.. but we need to work on getting it pushed back the other way! Vendors need reasons to give the data: how about if the user can leave and come back just as easily, “two way streets”, then we can create a level playing field.
